INTERMEDIATE
SCHOOL OVERVIEW
BIBLE
5th Grade
By accepting God's Word as divinely inspired, the students will see it
as the supreme standard by which all human conduct, creed and religious
opinion should be tried. Because God is all powerful, all knowing, all
wise and all truth, the students will learn of His plan of salvation from
sin through the redemptive work of His Son, Jesus Christ on the cross
and His resurrection from the dead. They will then be able to look forward
to Christ's personal return to the earth and the resurrection of the believers
to spend eternity with Him. The students will understand that it is the
responsibility of the Christian to pass this information on to others.
The students will focus on the faithfulness of God through His people
in their new surroundings, as witnessed by Ezekiel, Daniel, Esther, and
Haggai and Zechariah; and the instructions given to His faithful people
recorded in Nehemiah, Malachi, Proverbs, Song of Solomon, Job and Ecclesiastes.
Following Biblical history, the study of Hebrews, I & II Peter, and
Jude.
6th Grade
Drawing from the entire Word of God, sixth grade students learn that the
principles of God specifically affect their lives. Studies are drawn from
characters in both the Old and New Testaments and the life of Christ.
Also included is an overview of the book of Revelation. One of the goals
is to encourage the students to yield to the Holy Spirit's work in their
lives to conform them to the image of Jesus Christ while going beyond
factual knowledge of the Scriptures to grow in wisdom, understanding,
and application. Students learn to find answers in the Word of God for
themselves. All lessons focus on the development of internal character
through biblical examples and truth i. e. God's design and purpose for
us, being in God's will, reputation and character, and learning to stand
up for what is right even when it is unpopular. The ultimate goal of the
sixth grade Bible curriculum is for students to personalize the life principles
taught, develop convictions based on the Word of God, and to live according
to those convictions as they interact with others.

HISTORY
History is simply HIS STORY-God's unfolding plan of the ages. As we investigate
various periods of history in Intermediate School it is viewed from the
perspective of
"How was God working in a particular time and
place to bring about His plan for the ages?" In turn, students are
challenged to discover how God is working in their own generation and
specifically their own lives.
5th Grade
Students will investigate the earliest civilizations and cultures of man
from ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, China, Africa, Greece, and Rome,
extending through the Middle Ages. Much of our study parallels the Bible
curriculum and enriches their study of God's Word. Students enjoy the
many interactive activities that make history come alive.
6th Grade
Students will investigate the foundations of American History from colonization
through the Civil War. Special emphasis is given to discovering the godly
heritage that is ours in America. God's hand of blessing has been upon
America from its founding and continues even today. Students continue
to enjoy interactive activities as they investigate their nation's own
past and develop into citizens that will help to shape its future.
LANGUAGE ARTS
5th Grade
Students will learn that language is a gift from God and should be used
for His glory. The students will be able to read, comprehend, and communicate
at an appropriate grade level and to identify new words (using word context,
the dictionary, discussion, or class work). Students will complete two
novel studies where literary elements and enhanced vocabulary will be
learned. Attention will be focused on God's gift of language as they develop
composition skills. Students will be able to gather, interpret, and integrate
information and demonstrate such in writing (stories, poems, and experiences)
using proper spelling and grammar, remembering the importance and orderliness
of God's written word. They will continue to develop their speaking techniques
in small and large groups. The students will continue to acknowledge the
power and responsibility of words to build up or tear down and understand
how to use the Word of God to evaluate what is spoken.
6th Grade
Fundamental language skills are essential to comprehending, internalizing,
and communicating the Word of God to others and communicating with God
from their hearts. Students will read various forms of literature and
will be able to recognize the author's purpose and design for writing.
The student will increase proficiency in written expression by incorporating
methods from these forms in their own writing. They will write for a variety
of purposes to broaden their written expression. They will develop skills
leading to mastery in grade appropriate spelling and vocabulary words,
as well as in the mechanics of grammar and punctuation. Students will
also demonstrate comprehension orally and in written form in response
to their reading. They will develop skill in using conventions of English
to produce effective oral communication. They will also complete two novel
studies that will be integrated with other subjects where literary elements
and enhanced vocabulary will be learned.
MATHEMATICS
5th Grade
Students will identify basic concepts of algebra and geometry and to see
and recognize the orderliness and structure of our universe, which was
created by an orderly and rational God. Students will understand and demonstrate
the basic mathematical operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication,
and division, understanding math as a matter of learning truth, not creating
truth. Students' skills will develop in notation, fractions, linear measure,
weight, temperature, time, and in creating and interpreting graphs. Students
will know numerals and number words and be able to write numbers in expanded
notation; to continue to work with decimals; to add and subtract mixed
numbers with like denominators, converting fractions as necessary. They
will also be able to multiply two- and three-digit numbers, with and without
regrouping, and multiplying numbers ending in zero, using the short method.
They will divide two- and three-digit numbers with and without regrouping
and/or remainders, using all of the three division signs. Students will
apply skills learned about linear measure to find perimeter and area,
weight measure (metric and English), temperature measure (Fahrenheit and
Celsius), and time (estimating, converting, and giving time intervals).
Students will learn how to count back change as they continue to work
with money. They will work with various kinds of graphs and increase their
knowledge of algebra and geometry. They will review and master addition,
subtraction, multiplication and division computation as they develop grade
appropriate skills in problem solving, graphing, measuring, and applying
a biblical worldview necessary for vocational and economic competence.
6th Grade
Students will glorify God as they progress in their understanding of the
nature of God and how man's ability to understand math as a subject comes
from a greater understanding of His nature. The students will understand
and demonstrate the basic mathematical operations of addition, subtraction,
multiplication, and division. They will develop an understanding that
math comes from absolute truth; it is not the creation of truth. Students
will develop the skills in using basic functions and applying them to
decimals, fractions, whole numbers, and integers. They will master multiplying
two or three digit numbers with regrouping, multiplying decimals by decimals
and by whole numbers, putting fractions into simplest form, and ordering
numbers. Students will learn to construct and read graphs according to
the data presented. Students will apply basic addition, subtraction, multiplication,
and division to convert measures, geometry, and logic problems.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
The students will learn that they are able to glorify God through their
God-given physical abilities. They will be taught that they honor the
Lord when they give their best effort and complete a task. They will learn
to appreciate their own abilities, as well as the abilities of their fellow
classmates. The students will understand how body movement, spatial awareness,
sequence, and obedience to rules and/or guidelines relate to their everyday
lives. The students will explore and develop fit bodies through various
age appropriate games and drills. They will see how God has created beauty
through physical activity. Students will learn to be competitive while
showing sound sportsmanship, cheering each other on, and working with
one another now and throughout their lives.
SCIENCE and HEALTH
5th Grade
In Science, the students will be challenged to dive deeper into an understanding
of God's amazing creation. The students will build a solid foundation
by understanding the building blocks of science in life science, physical
science, and earth science. As they study life science, the students will
discover the variety and complexity within the animal and plant kingdoms
and how this variety is built upon the simple cell. They will also discover
how God has created this variety by using His laws of inherited traits
for the living cell. In physical science, the students will use their
understanding of the atom in order to identify the physical processes
of energy and motion. They will also study how man has applied those processes
in order to power technology. The students will also appreciate the consequences
of a changing earth and the vastness of God's universe as they study the
solar system.
In Health, the students will be awed by how God has specially crafted
the human body. They will build upon the knowledge that man is created
in the image of God and that He places high value on His creation. The
student will learn that their body is the temple of the Holy Spirit and
that they are responsible for His temple. These responsibilities not only
affect their own health habits, but also extend to include their families
and communities. The students will learn how to increase their contributions
positively to society as they are encouraged to build healthy relationships
and prevent taking part in harmful practices. The students will learn
about communicable diseases-the prevention of some and care during others.
Their understanding of good health will propel them to create habits for
effective service for His kingdom.
SCIENCE
6th Grade
Students will be drawn into an understanding that science is the study
of God's revelation of Himself to us through His creation. They will examine
the nature of God in their journey to understand the world in which they
live. They will explore the written truth and its relationship to the
natural world - God's creation. Students will develop the concept that
the Bible and the findings of science do not conflict. They will master
science skills to accurately acquire, classify and measure data. Students
will also be able to communicate, predict, and make inferences about relationships
between objects and events. Students will apply operational definitions
of objects, organisms, action, events, and processes based on observations
and information. They will gain knowledge of principles, theories, facts,
and concepts related to observations, processes, and outcomes in an Earth
Science investigation.
STUDY SKILLS
5th Grade
Fifth grade study skills deal with the basic elements necessary to study.
Students learn how to be organized. They learn the importance of keeping
a clean locker, clean workspace, and writing down assignments. Students
learn to manage their time and to keep a record of it. The second portion
of fifth grade study skills deals with test taking skills. Students learn
key elements to every type of test they will encounter. Students take
practice tests in which they look for the key words and concepts of each
type of question.
6th Grade
The 6th grade study skills program builds from the year prior to reinforce
concepts and to introduce them to higher level thinking skills. Students
will be equipped with the tools they need to maximize their learning potential
and success in their subjects through learning study skills, which in
essence are life skills. Our goal is to help students become disciplined
in their personal habits and proficient in school to best help them acquire
knowledge, apply God given talents, and live in the present with eternity
in view.
TECHNOLOGY
Intermediate students will acknowledge that God is concerned about the
details of our life and wants us to give attention to details as well.
They will use technology wisely, recognizing that true wisdom comes from
a right relationship with God. Students will recognize that perseverance
and orderliness are qualities that bring forth fruit spiritually and practically.
Fifth grade students will apply persistence and discipline to the mastering
of keyboarding.
Sixth grade students will be able to demonstrate effective use of hardware,
software, and computer applications while producing projects that integrate
classroom content with technology. Effective use of the Internet is included
in the skills addressed. They will understand the laws governing use of
the technology and commit to obeying them.
SERVICE PROJECTS
Students in Intermediate School are able to worship God through service.
They are given the opportunity to engage in service projects at school
once a week. Students are able to serve in classrooms, the library, the
office, and cleaning the grounds. Students are also encouraged to do service
projects at home during the week. Students are taught that our service
to others, when done with the right attitude, is a form of worship to
God. Students are learning that serving others not only blesses those
around them, but also is a blessing to them.
