THIRD GRADE OVERVIEW
BIBLE
Students will gain an understanding
of God's call of men and their obedience to Him by studying the
lives of Abraham, Jacob, Joseph, and Daniel. They will learn about
God's purpose for authority and His control of the future. They
will gain an understanding of Godly wisdom, character, and forgiveness.
They will memorize a weekly Bible verse that correlates with the
Bible lesson. Students will demonstrate comprehension of material
by practical application and completion of related activities.
LANGUAGE ARTS
(PHONICS, ORAL READING, READING COMPREHENSION, HANDWRITING, SPELLING,
GRAMMAR)
Students will learn that God blessed
us with the gift of language and communication, and it must be
used clearly, correctly, and ultimately for His glory. They will
develop an appreciation for literature, and knowledge that reading
is an essential part of understanding the Bible, God's written
revelation to us. Students will read various forms of print to
demonstrate reading comprehension and proficiency. Students will
use applicable phonetic skills and reading strategies to decode
grade-appropriate text. The transition from manuscript to cursive
writing will be completed. As students develop their written composition
skills, they will demonstrate mastery of grade-appropriate spelling
words, vocabulary words, fundamental mechanics of capitalization,
punctuation, and grammar. Students will develop skills that will
allow them to evaluate and correct their own written composition.
Oral communication, both formal and informal, will be developed
across all areas of language arts instruction.
OTHER LANGUAGES
SPANISH
Students will understand that God
gave them the ability to speak and understand other languages.
In learning a second language, they
will learn to (in the second language):
¨ Say uplifting words of praise to God and others.
¨ Take turns speaking.
¨ Communicate with courtesy
¨ Use their speech to glorify God
¨ Give their name, phone number, and birthday
¨ Answer yes and no questions
¨ Describe pictures in simple words and phrases
They will know that God gave them
the ability to hear. Students will understand basic listening
is important. They will become aware that God listens to them
regardless of what their indigenous language may be. Students
will discriminate between letters, money and numbers from other
symbols, objects, and figures respectively. Students will develop
their acuity skills by being able to listen to and correctly identify
sounds. They will be able to name and match environmental sounds.
They will also be able to repeat two or three items in correct
sequence.
MATHEMATICS
Students will associate the consistency
of mathematical truths with the orderliness, precision, and consistency
of God. Students will learn mathematical concepts and vocabulary
that will enable them to perform fundamental operations of addition,
subtraction, multiplication, and division. Mathematical skills
will be applied in the following areas: problem solving (reading
maps, charts, and graphs, performing mental computations, and
solving story problems); measurement (time, temperature, English
and metric systems of linear, volume, and weight measurement);
basic geometry; money (notation, value, counting, and making change).
Students will develop their logical thinking skills by completing
activities that require them to order, sequence, compare, and
estimate.
SCIENCE
Through studies, students will comprehend
the process of creation as related in Genesis and also man's relationship
to God's creation, particularly as it relates to stewardship.
Students will become familiar with laboratory materials and equipment
which will enable them to classify, order, sequence, and communicate
data relating to the human body, animal kingdom, work and energy,
space, ecology, and matter. They will become proficient in using
standards of measurement and will relate principles of science
to daily life.
HEALTH
Students will understand that their
bodies are temples of God, and He is honored when they value and
care for their bodies in ways that are pleasing to Him. Students
will acquire skills for personal health and safety. They will
learn how to apply good health and nutrition practices, and will
develop habits that will maintain a strong and healthy body.
SOCIAL STUDIES
Students will understand that history
is a record of God's sovereign plan. Students will gain knowledge
of God and Christian character by studying history, geography,
economics, culture, and government. They will gain understanding
of their responsibility to God, country, and fellow citizens.
Students will demonstrate appropriate growth in social attitudes,
skills, and values.
FINE ARTS
The students will know that by expressing
and fostering their creative abilities, they can glorify God.
The students will know that God's first drama was the creation.
They will know that there is honor in a finished work. Students
will learn to appreciate the talents of others as well as their
own. They will see how God gives talents to be used for His glory.
The students will recognize body awareness using rhythmic, imitative,
creative, sensory and pantomime movement. They will learn how
to use vocal expression and dialogue while coordinating body movements.
The students will identify the proper relationship between the
audience and the player. They will learn proper audience etiquette.
Students will participate in theater arts activities, which will
be incorporated into all subject areas when appropriate. They
will develop their creative expression skills as they learn to
appreciate the talents and ingenuity God has granted them.
TECHNOLOGY
They will acknowledge that God is
concerned about the details of our life and wants us to give attention
to details as well. They will use technology wisely, recognizing
that true wisdom comes from a right relationship with God. Students
will be able to demonstrate effective use of computer hardware
and software. They will understand the value of well-presented
written and technological communication in influencing people.
Students will recognize that perseverance and orderliness are
qualities that bring forth fruit spiritually and practically.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
The students will know that they
are able to glorify God through their physical abilities. The
students will learn how the abilities that God has given them
can be used to glorify Him. They will realize that by giving their
best effort and completing a task they honor the Lord. They will
know their own abilities, as well as the abilities of their fellow
students. The students will understand how body movement, rhythm,
time, and space relate to their personal life. The students will
explore and develop a fit body through various forms of activities
including age appropriate games and drills. They will see how
God has created beauty through physical activity performed well.
Students will cultivate habits that help them maintain a physically
fit body throughout their lives.
