FOURTH GRADE OVERVIEW

BIBLE

Students will learn that God has proven His love and power throughout history. They will study how God's leaders acted in history through the study of Solomon, Elijah, Elisha, Jonah, Hosea, and Amos. Students will see God's purpose in history by the study of Joel, Obadiah, Isaiah, Micah, Nahum, Zephaniah, Josiah, Habakkuk, and Jeremiah. Students will see the impact of missionaries through Paul's journeys. Through each lesson, students will see the love, power, and grace of God.

LANGUAGE ARTS
(READING, ORAL READING, READING COMPREHENSION, SPEECH, GRAMMAR, SPELLING, PENMANSHIP, PHONICS, LITERATURE, POETRY)

Students will learn that language is a gift from God and should be used for His Glory. Students will be able to strengthen decoding and comprehension shills as they read various forms of texts. Students will use phonetic skill and strategies to decode new words. They will be able to gather, interpret, and integrate information using various resources and demonstrate this in writing. Students will be able to use proper spelling and fundamental mechanics of capitalization, punctuation, and grammar. Oral communication, formal and informal, will be incorporated into the language arts program.

OTHER LANGUAGES
SPANISH

Students will understand that God gave them the ability to speak and understand other languages.

In learning a second language, they will learn to (in the second language):
¨ Say uplifting words of praise to God and others.
¨ Take turns speaking.
¨ Communicate with courtesy
¨ Use their speech to glorify God
¨ Give their name, phone number, and birthday
¨ Answer yes and no questions
¨ Describe pictures in simple words and phrases

They will know that God gave them the ability to hear. Students will understand basic listening is important. They will become aware that God listens to them regardless of what their indigenous language may be. Students will discriminate between letters, money and numbers from other symbols, objects, and figures respectively. Students will develop their acuity skills by being able to listen to and correctly identify sounds. They will be able to name and match environmental sounds. They will also be able to repeat two or three items in correct sequence.

MATHEMATICS

Students will progress in their understanding of math as a subject, recognizing that God's attributes and character are reflected in the mathematical world. The students will develop and master concepts of numbers as they relate to type, equality, fractions and value. They will review and master addition, subtraction, multiplication and division computation as they develop grade appropriate skills in problem solving, graphing, measuring, and applying a biblical worldview necessary for vocational and economic competence.

SCIENCE

Students will examine the nature of God in their journey to understand the world in which they live. They will explore the written truth and its relationship to the natural world-His creation. Students will develop the concept that the bible and the findings of science do not conflict. They will be able to use grade appropriate science skills to accurately acquire, classify, communicate, predict and measure data as it relates to ecology, plant life, electricity and magnetism and weather. Students will be able to process changes in objects, organisms, events and natural phenomena by making and understanding models and observations, taking measurements and formulating hypothesis. Students will become more proficient in designing grade level scientific investigations, gathering data, processing information and drawing appropriate conclusions.

HEALTH

Students will understand that their bodies are temples of God, and that they need to treat them in such a way that honors and glorifies God. Students will acquire skills for personal health and safety. They will learn how to apply good health and nutrition practices. Students will learn how to interact with individuals in society.

SOCIAL STUDIES

Students will understand that God's nature is revealed to us in history. Students will recognize that His dealings with people show us not only our importance to him but also his faithfulness to us. Students will explore concepts learned from the study of history as they develop God's perspective of the world in which we live. They will process and master concepts that lead them into developing attitudes and values that glorify God. The students will master such concepts as one's uniqueness and social responsibility to citizenship at both the state and local level.

FINE ARTS

The students will know that by expressing and fostering their creative abilities, they can glorify God. The students will know that God's first drama was the creation. They will know that there is honor in a finished work. Students will learn to appreciate the talents of others as well as their own. They will see how God gives talents to be used for His glory. The students will recognize body awareness using rhythmic, imitative, creative, sensory and pantomime movement. They will learn how to use vocal expression and dialogue while coordinating body movements. The students will identify the proper relationship between the audience and the player. They will learn proper audience etiquette. Students will use and develop their God given talents and creative expression for the glory of God. Students will participate in various theater arts activities, which will be incorporated into subject areas when appropriate.

TECHNOLOGY

They will acknowledge that God is concerned about the details of our life and wants us to give attention to details as well. They will use technology wisely, recognizing that true wisdom comes from a right relationship with God. Students will be able to demonstrate effective use of computer hardware and software. They will understand the value of well-presented written and technological communication in influencing people. Students will recognize that perseverance and orderliness are qualities that bring forth fruit spiritually and practically.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

The students will know that they are able to glorify God through their physical abilities. The students will learn how the abilities that God has given them can be used to glorify Him. They will realize that by giving their best effort and completing a task they honor the Lord. They will know their own abilities, as well as the abilities of their fellow students. The students will understand how body movement, rhythm, time, and space relate to their personal life. The students will explore and develop a fit body through various forms of activities including age appropriate games and drills. They will see how God has created beauty through physical activity performed well. Students will cultivate habits that help them maintain a physically fit body throughout their lives.
